My Home Sophie Hero

Sophie Ross will receive the keys to her brand-new home in Sorell this week, marking the end of a years-long search and the beginning of a new chapter for her and her daughter.

After renting for several years, Sophie knew she wanted something more permanent.

“I was ready to settle into a place of our own,” she said. “With my daughter starting school, it was important to be close to family and have a proper home base.”

Sophie began exploring her options, but like many Tasmanians, found the path to home ownership challenging. A conversation with her mother changed everything.

“She mentioned the MyHome program and once I looked into it, I realised it could actually work for me,” Sophie said.

Sophie talked to Wilson Homes about her preferred locations. Wilson identified land coming online in Sorrell and made the necessary arrangements with the developer.

With the support of the Tasmanian Government’s MyHome shared equity program, delivered by Homes Tasmania, everything fell into place. Bank of us is the partner lender to the MyHome program.

“I didn’t quite have the money I needed to buy on my own,” she said. “For me, MyHome made the difference.”

Congratulations on your new home! L-R Bank of us CEO, Paul Ranson, new homeowner, Sophie Ross, Minister for Housing & Planning, Kerry Vincent, Wilson Homes Operations Manager, Kristy Hunt.

The Tasmanian Government recently announced it is lifting the cap on new-build and house-and-land package values under the MyHome program, a move designed to encourage more housing supply and give more Tasmanians access to the program.

Under the change, newly built homes can now be purchased through MyHome up to $800,000, while the cap for existing properties remains unchanged at $750,000.

Bank CEO Paul Ranson said Sophie’s story reflected the heart of the program.

“For 155 years, Bank of us has been helping Tasmanians into homes of their own,” Mr Ranson said. “Sophie’s story is a reminder of the very real difference that MyHome can make for individuals and families when the timing and support line up.”

As she prepares to move in, Sophie says the moment still feels a little surreal.

“It’s exciting. It feels like a fresh start for us and a chance to really put down roots,” she said. “This is going to be home now.”
