“I’ve had eight years with the bank, but three or four careers”

Lachlan in Ulverstone

Lachlan Roberts spends his days helping people reach the dream of home ownership.

“I’d argue our commitment to help people into their own home is the most important part of our business success,” he says, sitting in the Ulverstone store recently.

“It’s the Australian dream, isn’t it? And to be part of the way people get into their own place is really exciting.”

Lachlan arrived at Tasmania’s only customer-owned Bank fresh out of school, still juggling shifts at the Burnie Dominos.

In the time since he has progressed from Customer Experience Consultant, to Personal Lending Specialist, to Retail Store Leader and into his current role.

“I’ve had eight years with the bank, but three or four careers,” Lachlan says. “I’ve had experience across a range of roles and been able to keep a fresh perspective.”

Despite growing years of experience, Lachlan is still young enough to be on a par with many of his first home buyer customers.

He understands the challenges presented by the state of the housing market, but also the strategies that can work.

“There’s two sides of the coin, in my opinion,” he says. “You really need to want to do it – to have the right level of motivation.

“And then you need to learn about what your options are – which is what we are here for.”

Lachlan said the Bank’s role as partner lender to the Tasmanian Government’s shared equity program MyHome, along with other Government incentives to help home buyers, were making a real difference.

Bank CEO Paul Ranson said the ‘heart of banking’ promise applied equally to staff as well as customers.

“We can only deliver in the way we need to for customers with great, highly engaged people,” he said. “Lachlan’s success with us is very much a result of that principle.”

When he is not working, Lachlan’s focus is on his young family and community, including being a heavily involved member of the Burnie Hurricanes Cricket Club, on and off the field.
