Karl Schroeder and colleague Sabrina Shields make a big contribution to the great vibe in our Burnie store.

You could say working at Bank of us is a labour of love for Customer Experience Consultant Karl Schroeder.
Not so long ago he was sitting in the Bank’s Burnie store – having relocated to Tasmania from New Zealand – working with staff to set up an account.
“Everyone was incredibly helpful and professional, and there was a real vibe in the place,” he says. “It was fun and positive.
“I asked what it would take to come and work here.”
Karl was asked to provide his resume and now spends his days delivering on the Bank of us mission: which is to put Tasmanians at the heart of banking.
“I was in senior Government roles in New Zealand, so this is very different,” he says. “This is my first role in the banking sector. It’s been a big learning curve, but there’s also been lots of support. I love it.”
Bank of us Head of Retail, Brooke Batchelor said Karl was not an isolated case.
“Karl is one of four people I know of who came to work with us having had great experiences as a customer,” she said.
“We know the difference that service and support make to our customers and there’s no better endorsement of that when our customers want to be part of delivering it.”
Bank of us Head of People Kyllie Campbell said Karl was also a very good example of the Bank’s approach to hire for the right ‘fit’, providing the skills through ongoing training and support.
“That people are excited about our values and what we do is a big part our selection process,” she said.
“We can train and support people with the skills, but having a brilliant attitude is our number one priority.”
Kyllie said a commitment to maintaining a positive workplace culture was one of the reasons the Bank was formally accredited as a Tasmanian Employer of Choice in 2019.
