Whenever you browse the internet it's important you take precautions to ensure your computer is protected from viruses and other malicious attacks.
The best defence against viruses, worms and trojans spreading to your computer is to have up-to-date antivirus software.
Consult your local PC reseller for help if you're unsure of a good antivirus software package to use.
Do not give anyone that you do not know, remote access to your computer. There is a current trend of fraudsters claiming to be from reputable companies i.e. Microsoft, who have been calling unsuspecting people offering to help remove viruses. If you receive one of these calls, do not allow the person access or give them any personal information.
Bank of us will never ask you to disclose your internet banking password in an email, over the phone, or by any other means. If you ever receive an emailed link to our website, or an email asking for your username or password, do not respond to it or click any of the links in the email.
Always login to internet banking via our direct website or from your favourites menu. You should never login to internet banking from a third party link on another website or email. If you do come across such links or emails please contact us immediately.
We also recommend that you don't enable your computer to save or 'remember' your password.
Always install any CRITICAL patches recommended by your operating system, e.g. Microsoft Windows. Your operating system may do this for you automatically, or you can use Windows Update.
If you are using Windows Vista or an earlier version of Windows, Bank of us recommends you upgrade before using Bank of us Internet Banking. Older versions of Windows are a much higher security risk as updates may not be available for new security threats and are not as rapidly deployed. Bank of us Internet Banking access may also be limited due to increasing security improvements not supported by older operating systems.
If you are using an operating system other than Microsoft Windows, ensure you keep it up-to-date with the latest security patches for that system.
Always run the latest version of your preferred web browser, and allow it to apply all necessary security patches. Wherever possible use the latest version of one of the following modern web browsers as these are generally well-supported against security threats.
Install personal firewall software on your computer to further protect it from internet threats. A properly configured and up-to-date personal firewall is the best method of protecting your computer from malicious activities such as hacking or viruses, while connected to the internet. Consult your local PC reseller for help if you're unsure of a good firewall software package to use.
